A Simplicity tunic has front tucks, a contrasting patch to hold them in place, contrasting neckband and a lapped zipper closure in back. Finishing early allowed this delightful young stitcher to make fabric flowers and a matching headband!
A Simplicity dress is made up in an Amy Butler print. The front and back are pleated into a yoke and green piping (not specified in the pattern instructions) lends a designer touch to the neckline and armhole edges. This kid is also an accessory designer -- she made the suede belt, too!
A Project Runway pattern is constructed in an Amy Butler cotton print. The front and back have little tucks that are sewn into the self-lined top band. Design details are pockets and the bottom band, which had to be slightly adjusted as it was intended for the tunic length version of the pattern.
This dress is a McCall's Hillary Duff design. It is completely lined with a lavender cotton lawn, which is an important design detail as the outer fabric is very sheer, taking on the cast of the lining. Tucks at the neckline and empire waist band create a beautiful fit. An invisible zipper was installed in the center back seam to complete a lovely creation!

A serviceable pair of pants for Scout camping trips were on this young designer's mind. We couldn't find such a pattern so he started with a Simplicity shorts pattern. Legs were lengthened, pockets designed and patterns drafted. The front leg is double fabric from above the knee down for extended durability. An ankle strap pulls in extra fullness and will prevent insects from crawling up his legs. The twill tape tab on his cargo pocket flap (see detail) was embroidered using one of the patterns on his computerized Janome Thread Banger sewing machine. Patch pockets in the front extend into belt loops and a real fly zipper was installed.

Never outdone by her Thread Banger brother this young lady does beautiful work on her preferred machine, a vintage Singer Featherweight! Her dress has an empire waist and self-lined bodice with fitting darts. She designed her pocket which has a curved bottom edge and was cut extra wide, then pleated into a band accented with white piping. She has won numerous ribbons for her sewing at both the county and state fair levels including a best of show at the county and a blue ribbon at the State Fair for the wool jacket she made last year in Junior Designer camp. Sewing with her is always a treat!
