Mastering Machine Tension

Master the skill of adjusting and perfecting the tension of your sewing machine for different sewing applications. You'll review basic principles of lock stitch sewing machine operation and tension adjustments. You'll learn about different shuttle actions and bobbin case styles, thread types and sizes, selecting the proper needle type and size, basic maintenance, how to adjust both upper and lower thread tension and tips for gauging proper tension. This is a hands-on-workshop - bring your sewing machine (in good working condition) along with your favorite sewing thread. A materials list will be sent when you register.

Fancy Footwork

Ever wonder what all those gadgets are that came with your sewing machine? Never  understood why you might change the presser foot on your machine? Is there life beyond the universal zig-zag foot? Steve “Bobbin Doctor” Pauling will bring his vast selection of specialty presser feet for a lecture and demonstration of as many feet as possible during this 3 hour class. You’ll learn tips on selecting quality presser feet, tricks on using them for professional looking results and alternate uses for various feet. Students will determine which specialty feet the Bobbin Doctor will discuss and demonstrate. Bring all your mysterious sewing machine attachments and learn what they are used for. Students may bring their machines for a  hands-on experience.

Binding Basics

This hands-on class will take the mystery out of applying bias binding to edges, including how to make mitered corners. Steve “Bobbin Doctor” Pauling will provide an over-view of binding attachments and tips on how to use them for making professional looking bound edges. He will specifically demonstrate the technique of making mitered corners and how to accurately join the beginning and end of the binding to produce a continuous and professional looking finished edge. Bring your sewing machine for making hands-on samples. Sample bindings provided with $10 supplies fee, payable to the instructor.

Lucy Apron

This multi-panel half apron is our take on a vintage design. It features bias binding on all seams and edges, generous pockets and a scalloped hem. Expect to develop good binding skills including how to navigate curves and use a binding attachment. Students will also learn how to make and use a pocket template. The Sewing Lounge pattern is included in the fee and will be mailed to students so they can cut their aprons out prior to class. Binding attachments are available for purchase at the Lounge.

Creative Cards

It's a stitch to make unique cards to reflect your love of crafting and sewing! Under the guidance of Steve "Bobbin Doctor" Pauling students will use sewing machines to combine paper with thread, ribbon, buttons, fabric, beads and more yielding surprising results that are sure to delight the lucky recipients! A supply fee of $10 is payable to the instructor.
