PDF Pattern Printing FAQs

PDF pattern printing is the process of printing a sewing pattern from a PDF file. It is a convenient and affordable way to access a wide variety of sewing projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you find PDF patterns?

Our absolute go-to and favorite source for PDF patterns is thefoldline.com. They are an online sewing pattern service in the United Kingdom and have created a comprehensive database allowing you to search for whatever type of garment pattern you are seeking; it will pull up practically all the patterns in the world, both commercial and Indie. A real rabbit hole but a trove of information, and so fun. You can also sign up for their weekly email and find out what patterns are trending.

I bought a PDF pattern, now what?

Once you buy a pattern you will be sent a link to download. Do this right away as some companies have time limits on downloading. We suggest having a file in your downloads folder or on your desktop called “PDF patterns;” once you have purchased and downloaded them, save all files there for easy access.

How do I get PDF patterns printed?

You can print them on your home printer and tape the pages together, or you can send them off to us and to other online services to be printed on wide paper. If choosing the latter simply share the desired file (we need either an A0, Wide Format or Copy Shop version) via email. Please email them to maggy@sewinglounge.com . Our one printing constraint is that our printer is 36” wide, though this generally makes no difference given how most PDF patterns are drafted. We’ve printed patterns up to 180” long but can’t go over 36” in width. Once the pattern is printed, you’ll get an email letting you know it is ready to pick up. You pay when you pick them up. You can also bring them in saved to a thumb drive, but emailing is the most convenient and guarantees not having to wait around if we are busy.

What are layers?

Many patterns are built in layers, each size being a “layer.” If you only want certain sizes printed, specify which ones you want when sending us the pattern. This is very handy so you don’t have as many lines to contend with. Sometimes they get so close you just have a black blob and who knows where the correct size line is? Not sure what your size is, or between sizes? Specify 2-3 sizes to be printed, and this allows you to grade at certain points on the pattern as needed.

Do you print instructions?

We do not offer this and recommend reading the instructions directly from your computer. Saves paper and the need to store instructions.

What kind of paper do you use?

We print on white 20# bond, which we find is durable yet easy to pin through. Once printed, we roll patterns so you don’t have to deal with crease lines.

Do you ship?

Not at this time. Pattern printing is available for in-store pickup only.

The pattern of my dreams is only formatted for a home printer

Not to worry. There is an app called PDF Stitcher and it allows you to tile those letter size pages into a wider file. This is something you need to do yourself and before you send us the pattern, but there lots of tutorials out there! Remember not to go over 36” in width.

Are there other convenient features to PDF patterns?

Yes, and our one of our favorites is different bodice fronts for cup sizes - genius! The companies we see this happening most with are Cashmerette, Chalk and Notch, Itch to Stitch, Jennifer Lauren Vintage and Love Notions.

If your pattern has this option, please specify which cup size(s) you would like so you don’t get everything. (Unless, of course, you want all the sizes!) Most Indie companies also have a lot of information on their websites about specific patterns, including tutorials on tricky parts.

How much do you charge?

We are currently charging 25 cents/square foot for both color and black ink. This makes an A0 $3 page + tax. A steal!
